“The Vampire is the new Alpha male in Romance”.
Yeah I’ll agree to that, because Vamps are just hot. WOOT!!
I have to disagree with what was said about erotica.
“You give a group of romance writers a couple of drinks and they’ll admit it’s pornography,”
I’m sorry, I don’t agree with this at all, and while it’s my opinion against someone who’s been in the business for quiet a long time, I have to say...
First off: I don’t see erotica as pornography. There’s quite a difference there, especially with the emotional aspects of it all.
With Pornography it’s all about the sex. No don’t get me wrong, I see nothing wrong with porn, have a few cd’s under my mattress, along with the Karma Sutra, but that's another story, we’re distinguishing between the two here.
With Erotica written in Romance, it’s about the Romance, the emotions that are happening between the two adults, what they’re feeling. The sex is more graphic, yes, the sex is way hotter, YES, but it’s NOT just about the sex. The sex comes secondly to the story, to the romance, to the relationship between the two characters.

Secondly: so does that mean that any passionate thing done in the bedroom (or where ever) with your man or woman is considered pornography, because you’re enjoying it?
Well Hell then, maybe it is. Call me the porn piper of the purple world, because I can’t just lay there, okay you get on top, and 1, 2, 3, it’s done.
The article also stated that.
“It’s hard to see it (erotica) as true romance, and it has a limited audience—they can’t seem to grow it.”
I’m sorry I don’t believe that either. Erotica’s been apart of this world since humans started having sex. And if it’s not growing…then why in the hell are the big boys in publishing like Harlequin, opening a Spice line, and now an e-spice line for e-books?
Because it is growing, it’s what the readers want. If Harlequin’s marketing research didn’t see a profit in it for them, they never would have even thought about that line of Romance.
It’s not all about behind closed doors anymore, I think it’s about, people wanting to read about what they do with their partner, or what they fantasize about. That they don't have to hide the fact that they like, write, or read erotica.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the sweet, and sensual, but I also love the erotic. Because it’s real, just a bit more detailed, and I’m not my grandmother.
Heck, even my grandmother expects Romance to have some sex in it, and she reads it
. Although she will say if it goes on to long (to many pages or to detailed), she’ll just skip ahead a bit. But she knows it’s there, because people have sex.
. Although she will say if it goes on to long (to many pages or to detailed), she’ll just skip ahead a bit. But she knows it’s there, because people have sex. YES, I’ve talked to my grandmother about this, and I’ve told her NO, I won’t let her read certain books of mine, because I know she won’t like them. I know spank my hand, I told my grandmother no, but she knows, that I know, what she likes to read.
I am the one who *Cough* handed her a Harlequin, and said hey read this. *Grins* So my question to all of you…what do you think?
NOW off topic a bit *Rubbing hands together gleefully*

WOW, fabulous blog!
Short version of my comments: ditto everything you said, plus huge congrats on Best Seller status for A Slave's Way Out!
Long version: Some authors and readers don't even want to try to distinguish between porn/ erotica/ erotic romance, and that doesn't bother me either, as long as there's no negative judgment implied.
What all three have in common (I hope) is that, among other things, they are designed to elicit a response in the reader. Emma Holly (who doesn't want to draw distinctions) is fond of quoting Lars Eighner, from Elements of Arousal:
"The erotic scene is the jewel of the erotic story. The writer may justify the effort of rewriting this scene many times. When a writer finds himself as much physically affected by the tenth draft as he was by the first, he knows he is onto something."
Um, yeah! That's why we love to read erotic scenes, write them, watch them. If we have someone special to share the experience with, so much the better!
Erotic romance, as you point out, adds the emotional element (so does much of erotica), and the happy ending that so many women seek in their fiction reading. When everything a woman wants is delivered in a book, it's a winner, like yours! Not to mention, men can enjoy it too; 20% of romance readers are male.

I do read some erotica but I pick and choose . Some of it is to much for me LOL I know I am a fuddy duddy LOL But what I read I do like
Congratulations, C! Woo HOO!!!
I strongly disagree with any statement that groups a wide variety of anything into a tight little lump. Erotic romance is not pornography. Do some people write pornographic books under the umbrella of erotica? Maybe. But as a general rule, erotica is about love and the sex is HOT, graphic, no holds barred...and if people didn't want to read books with explicit sex most of us here on this loop wouldn't be publishing the books we publish.
Sounds to me like somebody needs to get the stick out of his @$$. But that's my opinion, and he's entitled to his. Thank goodness we all have the freedom to say what we want to and that we have a variety of books to choose from. There's enough room in this world for all of us to be happy. :)

first off big congrats on the bestseller...
i so agree with you...i can't tell you how many times i have heard people say that about erotica....
i just think people should THINK before they say anything and try to throw it into categories or whatever....
Wendi, great statement:

"Who says" is Romance Writers of America, from their 2005 research survey:
Gender of Romance Readers
78% of romance readers are female
22% of romance readers are male (a significant increase from the 2002 survey that showed only 7% of readers were male.)

Wow, Thanks all for the congrats, and the comments.
First, congratulations on Torrid Title of the Year! you so deserve it girl. Now onto the blog topic.
Who the hell was this know it all dude who in fact knows nothing at all? Name, phone number, address please.
Next, you are right on the money with all this. Erotica is not about the sex. It's about the evolving relationship. We just don't slam the doors closed when it comes to the sex.
Sex is after all what makes the world go round. We are all creatures of sex and should never be ashamed of our sexuality. Yes, if you don't want to read it stick to the simply sweet. I'm fine with that, but no one should tell me that what I write is porn.
And I agree with you there too, there is nothing wrong with porn. It has it's place in our society. And like erotica, it's not going anywhere.
To say that erotica has a limited audience is naive. The erotica industry is growing by leaps and bounds every year and I suspect some of this bad publicity comes straight from some of the big New York pubs who want a slice of the pie.
Give me my romance with no closed doors in all it's graphic glory. Draw me into the moment and make me feel. And I do mean FEEL IT!
Awesome blog, CA. Truly awesome!
I see the erotica vs. Pornography debate a bunch of shit personally. Perception is what counts and most people are TOO AFRAID to admit they like SEX with their romances.

I forgot to add yesterdya "What the hell's wrong with pornography anydamnway?
